The National Jurist recently spoke to Elsberg Baker & Maruri partner Jared Ruocco on his advice for law students, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

“We’re always interested in hearing “why” candidates wanted to get into trial or litigation practice,” Ruocco said. “But the most successful applicants have both exceptional academic performance and express genuine excitement about doing the work we do.”

In preparing for his job search, Ruocco focused on the top. “I knew I wanted to be a trial lawyer, so I researched the top firms for their trial and litigation practice and once I had my interviews scheduled, I did more research on the lawyers from those firms I was meeting with,” he said.

His advice for law students weighing government versus private practice? “Law firms, like ours, offer litigation experience for young attorneys similar to what is available in the federal government,” Ruocco offered. “Private practice offers many similar opportunities to build your skills and set yourself up for long term success.”
