Elsberg Baker & Maruri partner Brian Campbell recently spoke with Law.com about his path to partnership and the lessons he has learned along the way. Campbell, who joined EBM after nearly a decade at his prior firm, describes the move as “an extremely exciting opportunity to go build a new practice from the ground up with people who had always been an inspiration.”

For associates hoping to make partner, his advice is to define who they are: “Building up your own identity and performing at that level helps you explain yourself to the partnership when they’re considering candidates for partner. So define who you are, lean into your identity as a lawyer, and demonstrate to the partnership why you would be accretive to their partnership.”

He also points to the importance of networking, noting that “especially as an associate, you’ve got to continually network and explore your options, so you’re prepared to pivot or advance your career if something unexpected happens.”
